Gracias mamá! MrChuy on why his mom is his favorite comedian
In the “Gracias, Mamá!” series, we ask high profile Latinx talents to write letters reflecting on the impact their mothers had in their lives and careers.
This time around, Jesús García -a.k.a. MrChuy- to pen a letter to his ama. Not only is he a truly unique creator that on a daily basis blends food and comedy content on his YouTube channel, he’s also an actor who’s appeared on Curb Your Enthusiasm and was featured in the MLB’s 2023 Creator Class initiative.
Dear Ama,
First of all… ay ama. I don’t even know where to start. I owe you everything—my values, my cooking skills, my sense of humor... and let’s be honest, 90% of the characters in my videos.
You’re the reason MrChuy even exists. Every time I wrap a towel around my head and yell at “myself” in a skit, it’s basically a tribute to you. You’ve been my biggest inspiration, my best teacher, and mi comediante favorita; even if you don’t try to be funny (but you are… too funny sometimes, let’s be real).
You taught me how to be responsible, how to stay close to God, and how to carry myself like a good man. You showed me that being strong doesn't mean being loud, it means being consistent, caring, and rooted in your faith!... And maybe, just maybe, also yelling a little when the house isn’t clean...
And don’t even get me started on your food. Your enchiladas? Life-changing. Your birria? A national treasure. Your chile rellenos and albóndigas? I’d fight someone, even if it’s a 2 year old, over that last bite. And the best part? If I ever want any of them, anything at all, I just have to ask. Next thing I know, it’s what’s for dinner. That’s love you can taste.
Even when you didn’t totally understand what I was doing, you never doubted me. You just trusted me. That kind of love, the kind that doesn’t question, just believes, is rare. And it gave me the courage to build something out of who I am.
So this Mother’s Day, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being patient when I was stubborn, for leading me by example, for cooking when I was hungry (which is always, unfortunately AND fortunately), and for loving me unconditionally—even when I turn your greatest quotes into viral content.
You are the heart of our family, and you’ll always be the heart behind everything I do.
