Holbox Island is one of those wonders of the world that you can't miss if you have the opportunity! Properly pronounced “hol-bosh” is a rustic, tropical island located a few hours north of Cancun. Its crystal-clear blue waters, pristine beaches, and relaxed life pace are enough to attract anyone.
Holbox ("black hole" in Yucatec Maya) is an island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is approximately 41.84 kilometers (26.00 miles) long and 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) wide, meaning that it doesn't take more than 3 or 4 days to go through it completely!
The island's main industry is fishing. However, the island is developing a growing tourist industry.
There are two options to visit Holbox: stay in a hotel on the island and enjoy it from there, or travel from a place on the Riviera Maya to Chiquilá port.
There are three points that offer this all day tour: Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. We recommend doing it from Playa del Carmen, since it is the one that takes less travel time: an hour and a half by bus to get to Chiquilá and then a beautiful 20 minute boat ride to the island.
Holbox: no cars and no worries!
This island has virtually no cars, most residents and tourists are transported by golf cart or moped. Vehicle entry is not allowed at Holbox in order to protect the environment and to prevent the streets from accumulating sand.
What to do on Holbox Island?
It has a lot of alternatives to enjoy nature, but the ones that attracts most visitors are:
- The experience of the bioluminicense at Punta Cocos (you have to stay the night to see it, but we promise it is worth it!).
- The beautiful Isla de la Pasión, where you can get amazing pictures of this white paradise.
- Walking above the sea on the kilometric sandbank in Punta Mosquito.
- Swimming with the impressive whale shark from June to September, an opportunity found in very few parts of the world.
When is the best time to visit Holbox?
The tropical weather on this island is very predictable, which makes it easy to plan trips! The temperature stays at the same average year-round (83°F) and the sun shines most days. Tourists should pay attention to the hurricane season, which reaches its peak in September and October.
The season that attracts most tourists is from January to April, so if you are looking for loneliness and peace you should avoid these dates.
The Fall and Winter seasons (November and December) are considered by many to be the best times to visit Holbox, since there aren’t most tourists at the island. Hurricane season is over and humidity is low. The only problem is that it can be a bit “cold” at night.
The months from May to October are considered the warmest and rainiest of the year, but there is still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm waters for snorkeling and diving.
