Everyone likes pizza. It’s a universal truth in life right up there with the sun sets in the west and the Star Wars trilogy is, and always will be better than the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Pizza is that good, and comes in so many different flavors, types, varieties, and combinations, that there’s always going to be something for everyone. Crust? Good. Cheese? Good. Toppings? Um…yes, please!

And while we can trace back pizza’s humble origins to Naples, Italy, it is a food that has made its way around the world and back, picking up different flavors and techniques along the way. In the United States alone, about 251,770,000 pounds of pepperoni are consumed each year, and they’ve even dedicated the entire month of October to celebrating all things pizza.

But, if you’re looking to give your next pie a bit of Latin flavor, we recommend you give these 5 recipes a try.

1 | Chili and beef pizza

While this combination might sound like the gut-punch your stomach most definitely does not need, your taste buds would likely care to disagree. Chili peppers have been added to pizza for years in the form of dried pepperoncini, but there are many different chilis you can add before the pizza goes in the oven to give the pie and extra pop of spice and flavor.

Couple that with ground beef that has been pre-cooked and you’re in for a pizza that is salty, savory, spicy, and undeniably delicious.

2 | Jalapeño pizza

What’s that? You want more spice? This is a pizza topping that will simultaneously make your mouth water and set it on fire. Jalapeños go great as a topping with chicken or Italian sausage, just be sure to have plenty of cerveza around to cool things down when your brow starts to sweat.

And for something a little different, try adding pickled jalapeños after the pie comes hot out of the oven. It adds a cold, but spicy crunch to help finish things off.

3 | Plátanos maduros pizza

Bananas on a pizza?! You heard right. This Latin American delight is a salty, sweet, and bizarre way to enjoy your pizza. This particular form of banana pizza, plátanos maduros, combines bananas with ricotta cheese for a flavor punch you won’t soon forget.

Also, the bananas can be fried separately and added to the cooked cheese and dough after it comes out of the oven. It might sound weird, but you’ll be surprised just how delicious this unlikely combination is.

4 | Taco pizza

This might sound like something you’d scoff at on the Taco Bell specialty menu, but it’s actually a pizza pie worth trying. It’s basically just a taco on a pizza – what could possible by bad about that?! Cook ground beef with taco seasoning (chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika), then add it to the pizza before finishing with onions, cilantro, and anything else that you might think.

5 | Spicy avocado pizza

Avocado isn’t something that bakes very well, but adding it as a cold topping on a hot, spicy pizza pie is a worthwhile way to enjoy it. One way to enjoy these toppings is to make the avocado into a quick, spicy guacamole then spreading it over the pizza as an extra flavor punch.

This goes best with pizzas either without sauce, or with a white sauce. Something about marinara and avocado that just doesn’t quite mix.
